Everything you need to know about completing your BCI and FBI background checks for Independent Provider certification

Why Are Background Checks Required?

Background checks are a critical requirement for becoming an Independent Provider in Ohio. They help ensure the safety and well-being of individuals receiving care services.

The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) requires both BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigation) and FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) background checks to verify that you don't have any disqualifying criminal history or abuse/neglect findings.

Good news: If you have a clean record, this process is straightforward — it just takes time and planning!

Where to Get Your Background Checks

Here are the most common and convenient places to complete your BCI and FBI fingerprinting

County Sheriff's Office

Most county sheriff's offices offer fingerprinting services for BCI and FBI checks. This is often the most affordable option.

$50-75 typical cost

What to Bring to Your Appointment

Don't forget these important items when you go to get fingerprinted:

Valid Photo ID Driver's license, state ID, or passport
Social Security Card Or document showing your SSN
Payment Method Cash, credit, or check (varies by location)
DODD Information Tell them it's for DODD provider certification

Important: Plan Ahead for Processing Time

BCI Check: Typically takes 2-4 weeks, but can take up to 6 weeks during busy periods

FBI Check: Typically takes 4-8 weeks, but can take up to 12 weeks in some cases

Your Next Steps

Here's what to do after you complete your background checks

Schedule Your Fingerprinting Appointment

Call ahead or book online with your chosen location. Ask them to submit your results directly to DODD for provider certification.

Wait for Results (Be Patient!)

Your results will be processed and sent to DODD. This can take several weeks. Use this time to complete your required trainings!

Continue with Your Application

Once your background checks are submitted, you can move forward with completing trainings and preparing your DODD application.
